Malawi – Food for Children with Disabilities
Feeding Children in Malawi
Malnutrition in women and children remains a persistent public health and development challenge in Malawi, especially for children living with a disability. Children living with disabilities are extremely vulnerable to hunger as they are often discriminated against within their own families and in their communities, putting them at greater risk of malnutrition.
ERDO partners with Children of Blessing Trust (COBT) to come alongside children living with different disabilities or conditions and their families to help them reach their full potential. A major part of that work involves nutritional intervention when necessary to help a child recover from a state of malnutrition to within normal range.
With funding from the Canadian government through partnership with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (1:1 CFGB Match), ERDO is partnering with COBT in Malawi to provide supplemental and therapeutic food, as well as treatment for approximately 600 children with disabilities who are severely, moderately, or mildly malnourished. COBT is also responding to the nutritional needs of approximately 90 mothers of children with disabilities who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding and suffering from malnutrition.
